Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6 Anyone else find it hard to relinquish control in stressful situations? If you’re like me (Travis), you try so hard to control and manipulate the outcome the way you pre-planned it, only to have a different outcome than initially anticipated. For me, a state of frustration usually follows regardless of the outcome. At times, I would make brash ineffective decisions in attempt to arrive at my predisposed fictitious mental destination. Reflecting on why I do this, I realized it was putting more trust in my capability and understanding, opposed to the infinite wisdom and direction from our Father in Heaven. I was elevating my plan over God’s perfect path. I love the set up of this verse in how it maps out an equation for us to navigate our walks. And it all starts with the big T, trust. Anyone else cringe at the idea of putting their trust in anything other than themselves? God created me in His image and made me intelligent, wise and pragmatic. Surely, I can figure it out. Why do we jump so quickly to what our limited capabilities are as a measure marker of the realm of possibility? Instead of looking to the infinite possibilities of God and what He can do through us with our availability. Who are we as the creation to think we are better equipped than the One who knit us together and breathed life into our bodies. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart…” This isn’t a “go with the flow” or “wherever the wind blows me” kind of trust. That is neglect. Neglecting that God is who He says He is and wholeheartedly believing that He has a perfect path for YOU. The trust we have in God is a trust that anchors us in the storm of our circumstances. This trust is an attitude, a confident assurance that God will supply all my needs no matter the situation. I’m not leaning on Me because I know if I start with myself I will end in scarcity and stress. We’ll say, “I didn’t get enough sleep” or “I don’t have enough time.” But when I shift my lean to Him, I tap into an endless supply for all my needs. When I recognize that He is the source of life, I willingly shift Him to the center of my life where He is at the core of everything I do. My trust is not built on shaky circumstances but on the character of God. Because when I know God truly loves me and knows what is best for me, I begin to submit all areas of my life to Him. My time, my relationships, even my finances. This act of submitting is not a cowering under or acting out of fear that something might happen. It’s a willful coming under the protection and provision of our God in an allied partnership. When we start acknowledging God in every aspect of life, we begin shift our pressures and stresses back into the appropriate hands. All the while God is orchestrating a beautiful masterpiece that displays His Glory. He is taking your seemingly crooked path and making it straight with purpose. He is taking your mess and making it His message. He is turning your burdens into blessings because He loves you. If your facing immense stress, I have one question: Where are you placing your trust? In yourself or in your circumstances? Or are you placing your trust in our Father in Heaven who has already prepared your path?
