S I N K | O R | S W I M

January 25, 2018

We go through many seasons in life, seasons where stress can sandbag everything we do causing us to sink. And on the contrary, seasons where we are swimming in a boatload of blessings with ease. Both are inevitable in life.

So what’s the connection between these two seemingly equal and opposite experiences? Are they inversely proportionate, the more blessings you have the the less stress you experience?

Stress is imminent, we know that, but thankfully we have God so we don’t have to stress, right? Well if you’re like me, you do have a personal relationship with Him but you still stress....a lot.

I do what it says in His word and cast ALL my anxieties on Him, but why is it, that sometimes, stress lingers longer than we want or even worse, the stress seemingly intensifies. We say to ourselves, “God here is my stress, take it.”

But how often are we left empty handed with more stress because the original stress didn’t dissipate?

If it stresses, we cast. We are so quick to cast everything on Him like some sort of stress sponge only to find that our stress spill is still around causing us to slip in life.

Financial stress, work stress, relationship stress, health stress are just some of the stress spills that pollute our lives. So, why has God not done His janitorial duties and cleaned our stress mess up?

If all we are doing is casting ON God and not communing WITH God, we are missing out on significant blessings in this divine relationship we get to have with Him. Blessings of peace in our present circumstances and a confident conviction of our promised future.

God does WANTS us to cast all anxieties on Him because He cares for us, but if we are incessantly casting our stress on Him are we even able to listen to what He is actually saying to us?

I know for me, when I feel alone, stressed and distant from God, it is usually connected to my where my focus is. More specifically, where my focuse isn’t. Is it on God or my problems? For me, all the stress that is problematic in my life is the end all be all of my attention. It’s the scorching fire beneath my bum that I fear I must put out before I get burned.

I become so hyper focused on my problems that I forget my place in the purpose of His hands. I become so consumed telling God about all my stress, that I don’t even seek God to hear what He says about my stress. I see a fire on the brink of burning my bum, He sees a fire on the cusp of severing the ropes that are holding me back.

Ask yourself this: When was the last time you sat still in His Presence and listened? When is the last time you told God you loved Him? When is the last time you simply thanked Him for ALL He has done without any caveats, contingencies or agendas?

These types of questions challenge my heart condition when I commune with God. Instead of grid locking our communication with only my stress, anxieties and needs, I thank Him, I tell Him I love Him and I humble myself in His presence to open up the many lanes of blessings, clarity and direction to hear from God in unique ways.

At times, I am significantly stressed by the many uncertainties and pressures I face. But I take heart in knowing I’m immensely blessed by God’s eternal provision. The truth of God’s permanent provision, allows me to be expectant in ALL seasons of life. I know it’s not a matter of IF it’s coming but a matter of WHEN it’s coming.

If you are stressing about not advancing from where you’re at, maybe God wants you to change your approach. If you aren’t prospering, maybe God is trying to reposition you into something of greater purpose. I know whether in pain or progress, God wants to preach, through the pits and platforms in my life. So that darkness would cower in the illumination of His finest Masterpiece, You and I.

Ego aside, it doesn’t get any better in all of creation, than you and I. According to God, we are His prized possessions, His first fruits, His courageous conquerors. At the crux of creation, you were crowned once and for all. We are sons and daughters of the Most High King crowned with ALL glory and honor.

You my friend, are His finest Masterpiece. You are His greatest piece of handiwork in all of creation. You are fearfully and wonderfully made, perfect in the eyes of our Creator.

Don’t let the stress sink your Identity when He has already taught you how to swim. God didn’t teach you to swim, just to see you drown. Ultimately, stress triggers a sink or swim response. Will you let it streamline you towards His promised provision or will you sink under your stress surplus?

He owes us NOTHING but gives us EVERYTHING. We have an unlimited access and supply in His goodness. So, let’s not choke off the flow of blessings by clogging it only with our stress and anxieties. You know who your Father is and His lavish love He has for you as His child, so declare it!

“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet He did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

Hebrews 4:15-16
